CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS

o        Abby, Clearbrooke, and MSA have committee to look at pooling their resources with regard to
membership recruitment and activities.  Currently they are planning joint installation and birthday
celebrations.  Over the last three years, they have donated $18,000 to the hospice side of Campus
for Care.

o        Clearbrooke is planning a Community/Family Day, have started their first Terrific Kids club,
and are in the planning phase for establishing a new literacy project—Reading Buddies.  They are
looking at a 3 year partnership with the central Abbotsford community schools to run a 1-1 ½ hour
after school program for reading, possibly snacks, and a safe place after school for elementary
students.

•        PNW Foundation—John Howe, Board member: Funds are raised from annual club birthday gifts
($5/member is their goal); Helping Hands Fellowships at $250, $500 and the Rusty at $1,000 and the
Emmy at $2,000; and Distinguished Service Awards ($100).  These fellowships and awards are
excellent ways to recognize special service from your members and community supporters.  The
Foundation supports scholarships and club grants.

•        PNW Governor’s Project—Children’s Cancer Project—Past Lt. Gov. Ron Currie:  Governor
Frank Morehouse’s Oregon clubs have been contributing to the Doernbecker Oncology Training
program specifically for brain tumors for years.  The PNW project was enlarged to include all
children’s cancers as pediatric training programs include hematology, oncology, and bone marrow
transplant.  Canadian clubs are supporting BC Children’s Hospital training programs through the
Canadian Kiwanis Foundation, which is matching $3 for $1 donated up to $50,000.  The Foundation
has not been tracking donation sources but that has been remedied.  However, the PNW is trying to
set up a separate Foundation to handle the funds but details have not been worked out so the
project has been somewhat on hold.  Ron has no information on how donations from Washington
clubs for the Seattle Children’s Hospital Oncology Program are to be handled.  Darleen Smith will be
talking at the Zone E Conference.  Hopefully she will clarify all these issues.  Of note, President-
Elect Claudell King has committed to continuing this project next year.
