KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL Pacific Northwest District - Division 18
SIGN PROJECT
Most extreme trauma in the world occurs in developing countries, much of it the result of traffic accidents in roads on which pedestrians and cyclists share the same space with trucks, buses, cars and animals.
Kiwanis-SIGN provides free surgical implants that surgeons use to heal otherwise untreatable injuries to family caregivers and primary wage earners.
Kiwanis clubs throughout the Pacific Northwest District (Past Governor Sylvester Neal, Honorary Project Chairman) are joining the effort to “complete the circle” that Kiwanis helped to make possible. Club and Personal donations of $100 pay the cost of providing one life-changing – and family-saving –surgery that is not otherwise available to the great majority of people in developing countries.
The P.N.W. District commitment is to raise funds to establish 100 SIGN centers. Each center costs $15,000.of which $5.000 goes for the necessary surgical equipment and the rest goes for enough nails for 100 surgeries. All funds go to surgical equipment and surgical nails to stabilize bone fractures and are provided at no cost to the patient.
All ten clubs in Division and the three Abbotsford Key clubs have been successful in raising $58,000.00 as of November 30th, 2009. The result is that the Division has established four Kiwanis-SIGN Centers at the following locations: Nyanza Provincial Hospital in Kisumu, Kenya, Africa. University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia, Africa. Mercy Teaching Hospital in Peshawar, Pakistan. Gilani Hospital Complex in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

Dr. Michelle Foltz is an Orthopaedic Surgeon who wrote a book covering her personal experience as a SIGN surgeon in developing countries as well as the history of SIGN and the Kiwanis connection. The book is well written. is easy reading and tells the story of SIGN Surgeons efforts to better treat the growing epidemic of trauma
The book retails for $18.95 but we have a number of books available to Kiwanis members for a donation of $15.00. Larger donations are acceptable as the net proceeds go to the SIGN project.
If you would like a copy of the book send your request and donation to either: PNW Co- Chairmen of the Kiwanis-SIGN Project:
